3GP is a 3G streaming media video encoding formats, enabling users to send large amounts of data to the mobile phone network, which explicitly transfer large files, such as audio, video and data networks of mobile phone. 3GP is a simplified version of the MP4 format, reducing storage space and low bandwidth requirements, the limited storage space on the phone can be used.

3GP file format stores video streams as MPEG-4 Part 2 or H.263 or MPEG-4 Part 10 (AVC/H.264), and audio streams as AMR-NB, AMR-WB, AMR-WB+, AAC-LC, HE-AAC v1 or Enhanced aacPlus (HE-AAC v2). Now 3GP file has two different types

  • 3GPP file format was designed for GSM-based Phones and may have the filename extension .3gp
  • 3GPP2 file format was designed for CDMA-based Phones and may have the filename extension .3g2

    General Resolution
    Both 3GPP and 3GPP2 encode with MPEG-4 and H.263, and audio file with AAC or AMR standard.

    1. Resolution of 176 × 144, suitable market for all mobile phones support 3GP format.

    2. Resolution of 320 × 240, clear, suitable for high-end mobile phones, MP4 players, PSP and Apple iPod.
